How To Be Funny In English – English Humor | Learn English + American Culture | TIPSY YAK

Hey Friends! Thanks for hanging out with me
again today 🙂 Today we’re talking about the 5 most popular ways to be funny in American
English. But first, I am drinking a chocolate stout…how amazing does that sound. That
is like dessert mixed with alcohol. Maybe grab yourself a drink and some dessert today…why
not? Being a good influence all around for your 2016 goal to be healthier. One of the
main reasons I’m making this video is because understanding and using humor in a different
language is one of the most advanced skills…maybe THE most advanced skill. If you’re one of
those people who’s English is pretty good at this point…and you want to kick it up
a notch in 2016…this is the way to do it. OK, so…top 5 ways to be funny in American
English…let’s start with number 5. Number 5 is something called puns. I hate puns…everyone
hates puns…but then you laugh at them and you don’t know why you’re laughing. So, a
pun is something I like to call a dad joke 🙂 This is the kind of joke your dad tells,
at least my dad tells…most dads tell. My dad would get up early every morning and cook
us breakfast, which was awesome and very nice of him. He would turn making breakfast into
comedy hour…where he would make jokes about eggs 🙂 Eggs aren’t funny…but dads can make
them “funny”. He would say things like…this breakfast is going to be EGGcellent….EGGciting….I
cracked the code on how to make the best breakfast. Do you get it? So, when you open eggs…we
say you’re cracking them. So a pun is when you use a word in a different way…or you
use it as part of a different word. So, like EGGciting…sounds a lot like exciting. EGGceptional,
EGGcellent…all these EX words you turn it into egg and you have a pun. EGGciting breakfast!
And they do this, like, pause…be like, ahhh, ahhh, ahhhh. Oh my gosh, but then you kind
of laugh because it’s kind of funny. The most famous dad on TV right now that is always
delivering amazing puns is Phil Dunphy…we’ve talked about him before, when we were talking
about the difference between the I and eee sound. If you want to see and learn more about
pun humor…watch Modern Family and listen to Phil Dunphy. One of his favorites is to
tell his kids he’s going to give them a little PHILosophy. Number 4 is called taboo humor.
Taboo, what is taboo? Taboo is a subject you shouldn’t talk about. More beer 🙂 Taboo humor
is when you laugh at things that you shouldn’t even be talking about, let alone, be laughing
at. Taboo humor is when you laugh but you feel guilty inside…like, that shouldn’t
be funny…but it’s funny. You know? 🙂 You can laugh about things like: death, sex, religion,
race, politics…all the things you’re not suppose to be talking about and joking about…taboo
humor makes fun of these things. For some of you taboo humor might be not funny…just
might offend you…so, if you’re easily offended…stay away from taboo humor. If you want to check
out some American English taboo humor…some shows to watch are: Always Sunny in Philadelphia…they
literally only use taboo humor, you’ve been warned. And the other one is Family Guy. Wow!
Wow! Wow! 🙂 And this is slapstick 🙂 Family Guy uses a lot of different kinds of humor,
it’s not only taboo…but they do have quite a bit of taboo humor thrown in as well. That
was number 4. Number 3. Dry humor. This is one of my favorites humors. Dry humor is when
people say something, but are purposely being completely expressionless….like, well I
think you should jump off a cliff. Something just..when you say something and you have
no expression…and the fact that the person has no expression is making you laugh. So,
it’s not like this person has to be mad or depressed or anything like that…it’s just
that they are purposely expressionless to make something funny. There’s one show that
has two exceptional examples of dry humor…and that is Parks and Recreation. I love this
show…it’s such a good show. Go watch it…there are two characters in this show: Ron Swanson
is the most classic dry humor character that there may have ever been in America…and
then there’s also a character called April Ludgate…who’s equally great at dry humor.
These two characters consistently deliver dry humor throughout the show…so if you
want to check out dry humor…watch Parks and Recreation. Number 2 is sarcasm. America
loves sarcasm…I’m sarcastic with you all the time. Sarcasm is when you say one thing
but you mean something different. Or sometimes you say one thing and you mean the exact opposite.
Like, your friend walks in and they look awful…and you say, ohhh….don’t you look nice…but
what you mean is…you look like shit. Which we talked about in the Shit Video. Sarcasm..there
are two very classic characters…one of them is the most classic sarcastic character in
the history of American television…and that is Chandler from FRIENDS. If you’ve ever watched
FRIENDS and you’ve ever seen how Chandler talk, you know about sarcasm. A second really
good, more modern example is Sheldon from Big Bang Theory. He’s sarcastic quite often
as well…not as much as Chandler, but still a lot of sarcasm. If you want to check out
sarcasm watch FRIENDS and Big Band Theory. The number 1 way to be funny in American English
right now is being awkward. Usually when I talk about awkward with even advanced students,
they are a little confused about what awkward means. So, what awkward is…is when you get
that feeling in your stomach, like, something’s very uncomfortable. Like, someone’s acting
really strange…sitting around making strange faces like…. 🙂 They’re acting awkward….you
don’t know how to deal with the situation…it’s very uncomfortable. But, a lot of times..watching
other people uncomfortable, is really funny. Two of the best examples of awkwardness on
TV are: The (American) Office…pretty much the whole show is awkward. And then also,
New Girl. The main character Jesse in New Girl, played by Zooey Deschanel is just constantly
awkward. And it’s one of the things that makes her so so funny. I recommend that you watch
those two shows to check out a little bit more about awkward humor. So, Friends I hope
that you enjoyed this video today. I hope that you get funnier in 2016. If you liked

  2. Let me share with you an experience with comedy in English I had not long time ago. At my very first days in the US, I attended a stand up comedy show with several performers that night. Of course, I didn't understand anything. I laughed a lot though, but because the laughter is contagious. And In the end, the joke was on me!!

  3. Kristen, let me share something with you. Two years ago, kind of, a guy comedian (he do stand up comedy and also TV shows, he's famous in Brazil) made a joke with a singer woman and her child (a baby), I admit was a bad joke but for me just a joke, he said: "I'd fuck her and her child" in live TV show, the singer sued this guy, she tried finish with his career and so on (for me she over reacted). Well, I'd like to know if this type of thing happens in the U.S and in Germany, does someone sue other person because of joke? Thanks for everything and I hope your channel have many subscribers.
