Laughter is the Best Medicine

Matthew McConaughey – This Is Why You’re Not Happy | One Of The Most Eye Opening Speeches

We’ve all got two wolves in us. A good one and a bad one. And they both want to eat. Best I can tell we just got to feed that good one a little more than the other one. Happiness is an emotional response to an outcome. If I win I will be happy, if I don’t I won’t. It’s an if-then, cause-and-effect, Quid pro quo standard that we cannot sustain. Because we immediately raise it every time we attain it. See happiness; happiness demands a certain outcome. It is result reliant. And i say if happiness is what you’re after then You’re gonna be let down frequently and you’re gonna be unhappy much of your time. Joy, though. Joy’s a different thing. It’s something else. Joy is not a choice. It’s not a response to some result. It’s a constant. Joy is the feeling that we have from doing what we are fashioned to do. No matter the outcome. Now personally as an actor. I started enjoying my work and literally being more happy when I stopped trying to make the daily labor. A means to a certain in. For example, I need this film to be a box-office success. You know, I need my performance to be acknowledged. I need the respect of my peers. All those are reasonable aspirations, but the truth is as soon as the work; The daily making of the movie the doing of the deed became the reward in itself for me. I got more box-office more accolades and respect than I ever had before. See joy is always in process. It’s under construction. It is in constant approach. Alive and well in the doing of what we’re fashion to do. And enjoying. The easiest way to dissect success; it’s through gratitude. You mean thanks for that which we do have, for what is working. Appreciating the simple things we sometimes take for granted. We give thanks for these things . And that gratitude reciprocate. Creating more to be thankful for. It’s really simple and it works. I’m not saying being denial of your failures. No, we can learn from them, too. But only if we look at them constructively. As a means to reveal; what we are good at, what we can get better at what we do succeed at. My life’s a verb. We try our best. We don’t always do our best. And since we are the architects of our own lives. Let’s study the habits the practices the routines that we have that lead to and feed our success. Our joy, our honest pain our laughter our earned tears. Let’s dissect that and give thanks for those things. And when we do that guess what happens. We get better at them. And we have more to dissect. It’s a get-rich-quick on the Internet riches 15 minutes of fame world that we live in and we see it every day. But we all want to succeed, right? So the question that we’ve got to ask ourselves is what success is to us. What success is to you. Is it more money? That’s fine. I got nothing against money. Maybe it’s a healthy family. Maybe it’s a happy marriage. Maybe it’s to help others, to be famous, to be spiritually sound. To leave the world a little bit better place than you found it. Continue to ask yourself that question. Now your answer may change over time and that’s fine. But do yourself this favor. Whatever your answer is; don’t choose anything that will jeopardize your soul. Prioritize who you are who you want to be and don’t spend time with anything that antagonizes your character. Don’t drink the kool-aid man. It tastes sweet, but you will get cavities tomorrow. All right life is not a popularity contest. Be brave. Take the hill, but first answer that question. What’s my hill? Well for me it’s a measurement of five things. We got fatherhood. We got being a good husband. We got my health mind, body and spirit. We got career and we got friendships. These are what’s important to me in my life right now. Because I want to keep all five in healthy shape. And I know that if I don’t take care of them if I don’t keep up maintenance on them. One of them is gonna get weak man. It’s gonna dip too deep into the debit section. It’s gonna go bankrupt. It’s gonna get sick. Die. So first we have to define success for ourselves. And then we have to put in the work to maintain it. Take that daily tally. Tend our gurdan. Keep the things that are important to us in good shape. Defining ourselves by what we are not is the first step that leads us to really knowing who we are. You know that group of friends that you hang out with that really might not bring out the best in you. You know, they gossip too much or they’re kind of shady. They really aren’t gonna be there for you in a pinch. Or how about that bar? That we keep going to. That we always seem to have the worst hangover from. Or that computer screen. Right? The computer screen that keeps giving us an excuse not to get out of the house and engage with the world and get some real human interaction. I bet that food that we keep eating and stuff to taste so good going down; makes us feel like crap the next week. We feel lethargic and we keep putting on weight. Well, those people those places those things. Stop giving them your time and energy. Just don’t go there. I mean put them down. And when you do this when you do put them down, when you quit go in there. And you couldn’t given them your time. You inadvertently find yourself spending more time and in more places; that are healthy for you. That bring you more joy. Why? Because you just eliminated the who’s, the where, the what’s in the winds that were keeping you from your identity. Look trust me too many options. I promise you this too many options will make a tyrant of us all. Alright so get rid of the excess, the wasted time. Decrease your options. If you do this you will have accidentally; almost innocently put it in front of you what is important to you. My process of elimination. Knowing who we are is hard. It’s hard. So give yourself a break Eliminate who you are not first and you’re gonna find yourself where you need to be. Make voluntary obligations, I’m talking about the ones that we make with ourselves. With our God. With our own consciousness. I’m talking about the you versus you obligations. We have to have them. Now again, these are not societal laws. Expectations that we acknowledge and endow for anyone other than ourselves. These are faith-based obligations that we make on our own. These are not the lowered insurance rates for a good driving record. You will not be fined to put in jail. If you do not gratify these obligations i speak of; no one else covers these but you. They are your secrets with yourself, your own private counsel. Personal protocols. And while nobody throws you a party when you abide by them, no one’s going to arrest you when you break them either. Except yourself. An honest man’s pillow is his peace of mind. And when you lay down on that pillow at night no matter who’s in your bed. We all sleep alone. These are your personal jiminy crickets and there are not enough cops in the entire world to police them. It’s on you. It’s all on you. We do our best when our destinations are beyond the measurement. When our reach continually exceeds our grasp and when we have immortal finish lines. And when we do this; the race is never over the journey has no port. The adventure never ends, because we are always on the way. So do this. Do this and let them; let somebody else come up and tap you on the shoulder and say “Hey, you scored.” Let them run up and tap you on the shoulder and say “Man, you won!” Let them come tell you you can go home now. Let them say “I love you, too.” Let them say “Thank you.” Take the lid off the man-made routes that we put above ourselves and always play like an underdog.

  1. I AB..SO…LUTELY loves this. I never know Mr. McConaughey could speak like this. I would pay to hear him speak, without a doubt!

  2. then again, If I was a millionaire movie star, that has women lined up to talk to him, I'd be happy to. Id rather listen to a person, who's life wasn't handed to him, someone who overcame hard ships, tell me how to be happy.

  3. Awesome words that have been spoken for “CENTURIES ” He neglected to mention WHEN he got to the point of NOT wanting Fame Fortune Accolades from his industry and peers…. it was AFTER he gained it!!
Love motivational speakers… Love it more from an average Joe/Jane still struggling! Someone that has no financial burdens are a hard pill to swallow when they say…. DON’T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF!

  4. It's cute , coming from a rich guy, all us" dumb " folk could get by with 1 million.
The question is how much did it take for the guy who is rich to give us advice ?

    Ask yourself that question..
Then answer it , and how to be him but not sell yourself for a dollar 🤷🏼‍♂️

  5. Blah blah blah……just sell your soul in a Jim Beam ad and sell a legal poisonous drug to awesome human beings to their detriment who think you have a platform to preach success because your craft is to pretend to be real….cheers

  6. Matthew what powerful speech…man I'm suscribe right now…only had to say.. thank you so much and GOD BLESS YOU MY BROTHER

  7. To all those who criticise this speech because he is an actor it doesn't make the message any the less inspirational. I'm usually skeptical of any "celebrity" who tells us how to live our lives but I like this speech. Does it really matter that he is acting? I doubt that he is. He may not have come up with this himself but in the same way that in a movie he is speaking what a scriptwriter wrote, many people can still be inspired by a movie. The only criteria, as far as I am concerned, is does he live what he is saying. If so there is no problem. I don't know him but what little research I've done on him would indicate that he's not a bad guy.

  8. Easier to speak from a comfortable place but some of who know how to fight hard for what we want also know that once we make it, our job is to help and inspire other dreamers.
I only listen to myself since I can focus what exactly makes me happy.
I am still a dreamer and a fighter but my goal is to help other dreamers to reach their goals.
Aren’t we all meant to take of each other?!?!?!?

  9. Matthew. But do you have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ? That's all matters when we stand before God on judgement day, my friend 🙏

  10. This is off topic, but it's 2019 and I'm just wondering about the news of the Epstein bullshit. But I feel bad for pedophiles honestly. I mean they literally cannot tell anyone about their urges without being thrown into the pit by 99.9% of society without any sympathy. But they cannot help who they are or what naturally happens in their brain. its very sad ;(

  11. One does not need religion to be a good person. We must only be kind to one another and understand our lack of knowledge of this reality to be grateful of our ignorance.

  12. WoW. You wouldn't believe the parallels. I've got chills, tears and a smile. I promised I wouldn't forget my brother. He is my Hero. He lived his dash. He loved everyone. He believed in me. He was taken too soon. I am today who I am, because HE was brave enough to be everything I didn't think I could be. Everyone tells me to get off Social media and quit playing music. That I am a game, a pawn or prop in a political game. I'm being used etc. I am aware, to think I am not is foolish. I am sincere and genuine and make no excuses for myself. Compassion and Empathy are lacking in so many people lives today. Everyone wanna be "Famous" and "Rich" and have it so backwards. Really they do. That goes from the top mass producers all the way to us little unknown poor folk. I vowed long time ago to be me no matter what. To stay true to who I am and the woman God made me to be. To never settle for the sake of being seen or heard. To do any and everything without a self serving agenda but rather for the sake of needing to be done. Has I never list so much, and so many in such a cruel manner. I'd have never gained the courage to say FUCK IT…If they laugh let em. If they cry hug em. If they spew venom ignore em. I learned that I could say so much more thru silence than I could ever say through speaking. I do nice things for others cause I am a good person. Not to see what I can get in return. Learning to have a sacrificial labor of love approach to myself and accepting that which I cannot change are two of the greatest gifts I ever gave myself. I am a work in progress and I will always be. They day we become impervious to change and love as a human race is the day we become extinct. That's how I see it. It takes twice as much energy to be a jerk to someone than it does to simply be pleasent. I know that in this life if so many out there can live with the perception of understanding hard times. Let me tell you until you've been there, done that, and bought Tee shirt, you don't have a clue as to how blessed you really are and hard times can be.
I live my life as an exclamation vs and explanation. I want my kids to know the value of their worth, in the eyes of the Lord. I want them to know how very much I love them and through insurmountable pain and sorrow came a hunger like no other to do whatever necessary without compromising myself and get them back in my arms. And if it's never possible they'll know I did all possible to try. I want to be my own BossLady in my life someday. The kind of BossLady who can serve as the example of how to be the exception in life instead of the rule. I am Karen Taylor Gowen Staggs. I am
    TheBossLadyInc ™ @
TheBossLadyEmpire ™ and God Paints my sky.

  13. Use God to fight your battles and u will win. Its been working for me and many others. Remember we wrestle not against flesh and blood but against principalities, powers, rulers of darkness and spiritual wickedness in high places.

  14. At some point in our life we shall find our self at a crossroad, we can either lean wit it or rock wit it. Choose wisely.

  15. We need a Population destruction and create a new religion. And prosper then hit the restart button. That's life. Survival of fittest. Don't drink the kool-aid. Life a tale told by an idiot full of sound and fury signifying nothing. Stop drinking Hollywoods kool aide. Stop drinking god he is dead

  16. S. Griff in reply to your mark twain quote, I would just say I would hate to be anywhere near a man who suddenly realises he was meant to be a serial killer.

  17. Humans need goals, and to accomplish those goals makes us happy. Many variables to that statement but it makes a long story brief.

  18. This man is possessed by a fallen angel that is a Narcissist and many other fallen angels are on this video as well.

These are the facts and the Truth.

  19. Though I appreciate what he’s saying I see him as an actor reading something written by someone else perhaps. He’s an actor remember that.

  20. This Man should be the Next President of the U.S.A. &of the Free World…The Pursuit of Happiness the American Dream..Be Happy!!

  21. After this, I can see why UT is taking him on as a "professor of practice" – he is a great speaker…alright alright alright!

  22. It's easy to be spiritual when you're rich. When celebs act like the normal people and lecture on happiness all I see is privilege. Never see them giving other people a day in their lives, but they love trying ours on for size.

  23. Accepting the truth and making changes are steps 1 and 2. Life is journey, a gift. I will try to give my life the respect and love it deserves, with joy as the primary benchmark of a life worth living.

  24. As an accountant, all I heard was "dip too deep in the debit section" which to me sounds like he's describing his five most important things as liabilities. I think my brain might be too far gone.

  25. Notice he never mentions maintaining a great spiritual relationship with the lord, this should come first, then things work them self out for positive results!!! Matt still lost selling bullshit!!!

  26. Don’t ever think that this is his thought of train , he just has the voice and can read cards well , it’s his job , pretending to be someone he’s not .

  27. So true. And if I ever was in danger of hurting someone else’s joy, happiness, job etc, I hope that person runs in the opposite direction. Protect himself and status, because, I’m not worth the consequences 👍🏻 don’t jeopardize your character and soul over me 🙏

  28. Just a little after 5 am, I’m gonna roll me a joint, drink my coffee, and think positive thoughts. Cause righteous thoughts of mind will carry out throughout your day. How we treat others , is a doing unto ourselves. Practice makes you bigger!

  29. Why dont they teach this stuff in schools ? U leave school knowing nothing about life. I wish school was about life lessons and not so much useless shit we never remember…

  30. So well said! It makes me so upset knowing that a majority of people in today’s society don’t really understand how our thoughts and feelings affect us. I wish they would be able to realize their potential and what part they actually play here which is kind of why I started to make YouTube videos honestly. I really want to help educate today’s generation about their actual potential and help them understand themselves and what part they Play in the world around them

  31. If you can't have the life you'd love, love the life you have.
I don't know if it's been said. I took it from CSN "Love the One You're With"

  32. Happiness, comes from within. If you are not happy in within your being, you will never find it anywhere. My mission was always to marry, love my man, have children and to raise up my children to be honest, hard working, loving people. I feel I have achieved that and am sure of it when I see how my children are raising up their own children.
