Toronto Mayor Rob Ford: ‘I Do Not Use Crack Cocaine’

Breaking almost a week-long silence, Toronto
Mayor Rob Ford denied he uses crack cocaine. “I do not use crack cocaine. Nor am I an addict
of crack cocaine.” (Via CTV News) This comes after the Toronto Star said some
of its reporters had been shown a video of Ford apparently smoking cocaine–a video Ford
says he’s never seen. “As for a video, I cannot comment on a video
that I’ve never seen or does not exist.”
The Star reports a group of Somali men
involved in the drug trade originally approached the newspaper with a video that would incriminate
Ford of using the drug. After seeing the video three times, reporters say it featured Ford
sitting in a chair, inhaling from what appeared to be a glass crack pipe.  The Star reported it could not verify the
authenticity of the video, but was told it was shot this past winter. The mayor originally dismissed the claims,
calling the allegations “ridiculous” and saying this is just an attempt of the Star to attack
him. (Via Toronto Sun) But some are questioning the language Ford
used in his most recent statement. Gawker, who has also claimed to have seen the video,
pointed out that Ford did not say he never smoked crack cocaine, like someone who has
never done so would say. Instead, Ford said he does not smoke the drug,
which, according to Gawker, “is the sort of thing that someone who woke up this morning
and decided to stop smoking crack cocaine might say, on the grounds that it’s not presently
untrue.” And even some of Ford’s colleagues aren’t
convinced he’s telling the truth. CBC News reports Coun. Glenn De Baeremaeker,
believes Ford can no longer legitimately maintain his role as mayor and should resign. “I don’t believe what the mayor said today,
and I think that’s very unfortunate. Instead of acknowledging the issue and agreeing to
get some help, he just went on the attack, and I think that just makes it worse.” But others are sticking by the mayor. Deputy
Mayor Doug Holyday lashed out at the Star, questioning how it could make these accusations
without proof the video exists. (Via CNN) Ford has made no mention of plans to resign
from office. u
